Holy crap, my body is changing!

beauty and self-esteem, beauty portraits, feeling beautiful while aging
On my thirtieth birthday (yes, I turned thirty this year) I slowly raised myself from the warmth of my duvet and turned on the shower to begin my morning ritual. I undressed from my winter sleepwear and while the shower began to fill the room with steam I looked at myself in the mirror and was shocked at what I saw. Slowly, my body had changed.

Startled, I examined my body thoroughly and saw that my once tight skin was starting to sag, my under arms were flapping and my legs were gathering fat where muscle used to be. Not exactly what I want to see on the morning of my birthday, but there was a part of me that was happy that I was aging. My aging body was telling me that I’m no longer an awkward teen, or an early twenty year old girl trying to be a woman.

beauty and self-esteem, beauty portraits, feeling beautiful while aging

With all the media attention stating that ‘real beauty’ is being rail thin, with a six pack, legs a mile long, and long blonde hair; I should feel ugly. I should feel like there is walking billboard before me saying “Find out who isn’t staying in shape” with a huge photo of myself in the most unflattering position (because the media would get the most attention from that). Thankfully, this is not the case.

I don’t want to my whole life to be filled with hate for my body, that is not the type of memory or leagcy I want to leave behind. I want to appreciate everything it does for me and in return what I do for it. I want my other sisters and daughters in this world to feel that they truly beautiful because they are shaped differently than the girl next to her. I’m tired of hearing that there are as many as 10 million females and 1 million males living in the US fighting a life and death battle with anorexia or bulimia. We need to stop beating ourselves up because we don’t look like what the media portrays as beautiful. We are beautiful, exactly as we are!

Even though I know I should practice my yoga more, run more, eat more salads and less cheese I love this body that I’ve been blessed with. Even though my body is changing I am accepting it as my own way of showing everything it’s been through. The successes, the tears and fears, the weight gains and weight loss. I want to celebrate everything my body has done for me!

Will you celebrate your changing and aging body with me? I’m eating a piece of dark chocolate already!

Knowing when to invest in your business

I’m an artist, a creative multi-passionate, a photographer, an entrepreneur! Every day I encounter services, products, and workshops that my peers are telling me is the ‘Greatest thing on Earth’. I’m intrigued, I latch on, I sign up. Most of my investments have paid off, some…not so much.

Earlier this year I held a piece of equipment, the beautiful Canon 5D mark III, in my hands and had the hardest time putting it down. I was intrigued, I latched on, but I couldn’t sign up. My current gear was working just fine for me, actually better than fine! So when everyone was running to get the latest toy to add to their repertoire, I told Mister, it wasn’t right.

However, on Friday evening as soon as Mister walked through the door I was jumping around the living room like a child high on sugar. “Babes!” I called out and smiled at him, perhaps even batted my eyelashes, and proclaimed I was investing in my business.

That evening I signed up for Marie Forleo’s: Rich, Happy & Hot B-School! It wasn’t cheap, heck the cost of tuition is just under the cost of a new camera body or a really nice trip somewhere, but I knew that this investment was right for my business.

So, you might be wondering: how do you know when to invest in your business? This is my process…three steps that I go through every single time something comes up that intrigues me, I latch onto and think about signing up for:

how to build my business, being a creative business owner, achiving success, business coaching, lifestyle coaching, lifestyle consultant, business management

Will this bring you more clients?

Yikes, I know…we don’t actually know if anything will…but does investing in the latest gear actually going to bring more clients into your door? This also goes for magazine ads, rebranding, meeting a vendor for lunch. Any time you’re about to pull out your card to pay for something, think “Will this bring more clients?”

Can I afford it?

We all dream of owning the latest thing, but before pulling out your card ask yourself honestly can you afford to invest in it? The leader in your industry might proclaim it’s the best in the business but can you afford the monthly fee or the huge investment? If the money is not already sitting in your bank, what is your plan to make sure you get clients in the door so you don’t end up in debt. Be smart about where you’re putting your money.

What is your intuition telling you?

The universe, God or gods, your destiny, gut – whatever you want to call it – it will let you know if the investment is right for you. And listen intently. If you know me, you know I’m all about intuition, and I make sure I”m very in tune with mine. After analyzing steps One and Two I take a hard look at what my intuition is telling me. You’ll know whether you are getting excited about something because everyone is raving about it or because you know it’s the right thing for your business.

Once I went through my 3 steps I knew without a doubt that attending B-School was the best investment for me. I have dreams of where I want to go and I am going about this with intention of getting more out of it than I ever expected (which means A LOT since I have high expectations for it!). I’d love to have you join me!!

Inspiring elements

THE WELLNESS WARRIOR  I cannot recall how I came upon Jess Ainscough’s blog called The Wellness Warrior, but I do know I was hooked the moment I started reading. She has documented her journey from learning she had cancer to changing her lifestyle so that she could conquer her battle with cancer and live a long healthy life. She’s inspired me to really look at what I’m putting into my body and how it’s going to effect me. Check her out, plus she lives in one of my favourite places in the world.

LUDOVICO EINAUDI I found this ‘new to me’ Italian pianist while listening to 8tracks, I was immediately hooked. I instantly purchased his CD, Una Mattina, and have been listening to it on repeat most days. I find it so beautifully inspiring.

BEYONCE I’ve always been drawn to women who know exactly what they want in life and have this amazing drive to see it come true. Beyonce is one of those amazing women. I recently watched her documentary about her year of creating 4 and found myself sitting closer and closer to the screen inspired by how she wants to change the world. Watch it and be inspired!

EUROPEAN BLOG CONFERENCE The moment I saw The Hive I knew I wanted to go. Berlin, another favourite European city and a conference all about blogging, hook me up! Sadly, I won’t be attending due to some scheduling conflicts but if you’re into blogging I highly suggest you go. It’s next weekend and they have some amazing speakers from all around Europe to talk about how to blog for the European market and of course how to make your blog top-notch!

Netherlands | Amsterdam Boudoir Photography

One of the most common questions I get when a woman is interested in booking her beauty or boudoir session is that she doesn’t think that she is pretty, thin, or sexy enough. That somehow the women on my website seem to have it all and they are thinking they just don’t cut it.  This breaks my heart when I hear this because, it’s not true.

I photograph women of ALL ages, shapes and sizes.  I specialize in making all women look and feel their most beautiful.  The women on the website are not all models, are not all in their twenties, are not all size 10 or smaller.  I do, however, make sure that every woman feels like they are model for a day though!

Miss E came in excited but completely nervous for her session. After having her makeup done and going through the lingerie she brought she felt like she was finally able to embrace her sexy side and was ready for her boudoir shoot. She was beautiful, elegant, and totally sexy in her own skin; it was a fantastic transition!

I am always grateful when a past client allows me to share their images with the world! It doesn’t always happen as the images we create are usually just for them, so thank you Miss E, for allowing me to share your images. Perhaps you’ll inspire someone to embrace their sexy side and book a boudoir session!

what do you do with boudoir images

I uploaded a photo to facebook yesterday with the caption that I was finally putting some images up on the studio walls. After I pressed ‘post’ I realized that this the first time that I’ve printed something that I created to display in my own space. It was a fantastic feeling! I then wondered, how many people have images sitting on their computer, burned to a disc or sitting on their phones, that they’ve never printed.

And then I was thinking of the women who come into the studio for their shoot and gift their albums to that special someone in their life, and unless they pull the album back out, the images are still hidden away.

So just in case you’ve been wondering what exactly to do with your boudoir images, an option is to print them and hang them! Now this isn’t for everyone, but when we’re having your consultation bring it up if you think you might want to print one and hang them somewhere. We can always create some beautiful boudoir fine artwork that is appropriate to display in your home, and people won’t even know it’s you!

She came in nervous but excited about creating boudoir images for her future husband. With a suitcase full of gorgeous lingerie just picked up from Hunkemoller and other stores around her home town she was ready to be styled and made over. While she sipped on a glass of wine she talked easily about her upcoming wedding and the love of her life. She smiled whenever she talked of him. We then cranked the music and she came alive in front of the camera.

Miss V, thank you so much for allowing me to share your boudoir photos. I wish you much love and happiness!

fuerteventura, canary islands

creating your ideal life, living life with purpose and pleasure, life with purpose and passion

We spent 8 days bathing ourselves in the Canary Island morning sun, partaking in siesta by sleeping afternoons away under white cotton sheets, and enjoying evenings on our balcony while sipping Spanish wine listening to the waves wash against the rocks below. We reminisced about our past. We envisioned our future. He spoke lines to me from the latest novel he was reading and I lost myself in the ocean, daily. We dreamed of living a life by a tropical ocean, at least for a time.

Now, we’re back in gray cloudy Holland working side by side to welcome old friends into our new home and looking forward to reminiscing about the past with them while envisioning a bright future!

defining your success

how to define success, roadmap to success, plan for success

Recently in a blog post I declared my success and that I was proud of all that I accomplished. However, in my excitement of declaration I forgot to share how I define success!

how to define success, roadmap to success, plan for success

In the photography industry there is a funny conversation that happens when two photographers meet as if it’s apart of doing business and networking:

Photographer 1: “Hey, so nice to finally meet you!”
Photographer 2: “Thanks, I’m excited we finally get to meet as well! Your work is amazing”
Photographer 1: “So, how many bookings do you have this year?! What are you charging?”
Photographer 2: “I’ve got 10 so far, it’s low. I start at €700. How about you, how are you doing?!”

These two photographers are comparing their pricing and the amount of sessions they have booked against each other to either make themselves feel better or perhaps they leave the meeting feeling worse because Photographer 1 has booked 5 sessions at €1000. If the milestones you set in your roadmap to success are money alone than perhaps you’ll feel great or depressed depending on the situation you are in. However, there are so many different factors in deciding what exactly your success will look like.

Know the bigger picture but set proper milestones.

I’m a believer in knowing what the bigger picture looks like as this is what gets me out of bed in the morning and after spending hours upon hours behind a computer I know exactly what I’m working towards. However, when the weight of the big picture is sitting on your shoulders you can easily get lost and feel like you aren’t measuring up if you haven’t set up proper milestones (street signs if you will) to know if you’re on the correct path or if you’ve strayed.

If your ideal situation is to have a brick & mortar space to hold your business in 3 years, GREAT! But what are the milestones you need in place to make sure you can see it a reality. Sometimes it helps to think backwards as to what your space will look like and everything you did to get there. I find this is a great way to know exactly what milestones you need to meet and what steps lead you where.

If you just dream of the bigger picture but never work through the milestones you’ll feel like you’re never going to reach your goal if you can’t see all the steps you’re making along the way.

Don’t wait for it to feel perfect.

Sometimes with all our dreaming and planning we can get so caught up in what the ideal situation can look like, that if we allow ourselves to only rely on that dream to dictate how everything will be, we will miss the mark.

We had on our travel goals this year to go on a beach windsurfing holiday as I love the beach, Mister loves windsurfing, and we were both longing for some hot weather. After saving, researching, booking our flight and hotel, packing, departing and landing we stayed a whole week on a Canary Island (see all the milestones there are just for going on holiday (; ). We spent a whole week by the beach completely relaxed. Although we watched many windsurfers Mister didn’t go out on the water once. Our goal was a beach windsurfing holiday and we easily could have said our time in the Canary Islands didn’t make the mark, but we know that we can’t wait for everything to be just right or perfect for us to say, SUCCESS!

Your success should only be relevant to your needs and wants.

When I started working towards building my ideal lifestyle and business I wrote down exactly what I wanted it to look like; everything I could possibly think of. I started with defining what my ideal day looked like, to how I wanted to treat my clients, how many I knew I could take on while providing the quality of service that I had said I wanted to give, to where I would live, and how my business would benefit my life.

Success is different for everyone: for some it might being able to purchase the latest tech toy, to get a manicure every week, to travel and run every marathon around Europe, to get rid of the tv in their living room, to have a baby, to finally cook a meal at home.

When you know exactly what your definition of success is it won’t matter when you’re questioned on how many sessions you have, how much you’re making or why you eat soup and salads for dinner every week. You know exactly what you’re working towards and won’t feel bad for declaring success!

Consider this: Your definition of success should be so personalized that it’s practically a fingerprint that you know it won’t suit anyone but you!

I am not claiming that following my advice will lead you to success or that I know everything about how to achieve goals, I’m just sharing my process of how I define my goals and how I know when to celebrate along the way. Everyone is on their own journey.

Keeping track of your workflow

A high tea session is a monthly publication created for the purpose of feeling like we’re spending an afternoon together over delicious cakes while drinking some fresh tea to discuss some questions that I am asked regarding business, so grab your cup of tea (mine is Earl Grey) and settle in:

The past month I’ve been spending numerous hours inside a business that is not mine, but wanting to see succeed just as much as my own. I’ve been working with another entrepreneur on getting their business work flows, systems, and marketing in place to help them propel their business forward. It’s been fantastic to see them go from overwhelming stress to a sense of calm and direction in just a few short weeks. Aside from photography, I love working with women business owners and pushing their passions forward and this has been a great outlet for me.

As I’ve been working with her, creating spreadsheets and digging in deeper with how her business runs, I thought I’d share a few of my favourite tools with you that help me stay on top of my routine tasks and clients.

KNOW THE TYPE OF BUSINESS YOU’RE RUNNING
The experience, service and products I provide for my clients is luxurious and high end, however, with that in mind I run my business with the mantra that simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication. I’ve built my business with every intention of being low volume with high impact, a working schedule that has a decent work/life balance so I can put 100% energy into running my business during office hours and take regular vacations and relax 100% of the time while I’m away. I also know that I’d be hiring an assistant. Because I’ve been hyper aware of what type of business I am building I knew the type of processes I’d need to put into place so that I can give that luxurious and high end experience and when I my assistant walks in the door they will know exactly where I am with in every aspect of my business with as little input from me. Knowing the type of business you’re running and where it’s headed will help dictate what you need from office management, applications to run, and products to order.

KEEPING TRACK OF DOCUMENTS
I work with 2 different computers (I’m a MAC & PC), which is handy when I need multiple screens open while I’m working, but is very daunting when I’m trying to track down where I saved my pricing sheet. Between the 2 computers, 2 external harddrives, and USBs, my documents got out of hand. So I moved everything that I needed to access on a daily basis to Google Docs. This makes it easy to access from any computer in my studio or if I happen to be traveling I don’t have to worry about transferring files before leaving (granted I have to find wifi but it’s pretty easy to find these day). I also love Dropbox to transfer files back and forth and not have to hassle with USB or Harddrives.

TRACKING CLIENT PROGRESS
I created a spreadsheet inside Google documents titled, Every experience is LUX, because Client workflow is too boring for me. It’s also a daily reminder to go above and beyond my client’s expectations. Every part of my workflow is documented from booking, confirming a makeup artist, backing up images, and selecting which gifts to send is so that I can track every move and follow up when needed.

STREAMLINE THE PROCESS
I work hard on making every client experience LUX, but I also desire a simple and streamlined process as much as possible. So I have templates created for every step along the way. Everything from client’s first inquiry to a list of what I need to pack for every shoot. Email templates are saved as a Quicktext inside my Thunderbird email application, which makes it easy to customize for each client. What gear to pack (everything from a session to a spring or winter vacation) is held in a document so I know what needs to go in the suitcase. And all the small details that go in my final package to my client is also listed out in a document with the location it resides in my studio so that it can easily be found. It saves me so much time and is perfect for when if I am unable to complete something within my deadline that I can easily have someone come in and finish it off for me.

This is just a glimpse into how I stay on top of my work flow and hopefully will help you if you’ve been wondering what to do. But also, please share in the comments what you are currently doing!

Also, if there is anything in regards to business you’d like to know, feel free to email me!
